David Despain is a freelance science and health writer with a passion for good food combined with a good story. He has a master’s degree in human nutrition from University of Bridgeport and a bachelor’s degree in English from University of Illinois @ Springfield. He lives, eats too much, burns off some of the excess by exploring the outdoors, and gets plenty of the “sunshine vitamin” in Gilbert, Ariz.
He’s written for a variety of publications including Scientific American, Outside Online, the American Society for Nutrition’s (ASN) Nutrition Notes Daily, and Institute of Food Technologists’ (IFT) Food Technology magazine and Live! blog. He’s also covered new findings reported at scientific meetings including Experimental Biology, AAAS, AOCS, CASW, Sigma Xi, IFT, and others for a variety of publications and on his blog “Evolving Health.” In addition, he’s written about topics related to food for his local Cactus IFT chapter newsletter and about wildlife conservation for his local Desert Rivers Audubon chapter newsletter.
He’s an active member of respected organizations including the National Association of Science Writers (NASW), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), ASN, IFT, the American Oil and Chemical Society (AOCS), the National Audubon Society, and the American Society of Naturalists.
